The Women's Home holds a very special place in my heart. As a former part-time staff member of The Women's Home, I saw firsthand the impact being made in the lives of women, children, families and all those who were involved in the work (staff, volunteers and donors). The Women's Home offers four unique programs that support women experiencing hardships, including prevention to help end homelessness in our community. They build communities that strengthen and empower women and support their families as they reclaim their stability. The Women"s Home is making a difference, and it is an honor to be able to support the work of this non-profit through my this one-of-a-kind fine art piece commissioned by M.M.LAFLEUR.
The work is one-of-a-kind because of its inspiration and my commitment to not create a work using this image or design again.
More about the heart behind the art piece...This is a special collaboration with M.M.LaFleur, a female founded clothing brand based in NYC and built on the core belief that when women succeed, the world becomes a better place to celebrate their 10 year anniversary.
In celebration of their ten-year anniversary, M.M.LaFleur commissioned seven artists to create one-of-a-kind artwork inspired by their radiant new icon, "Woman with an Idea"--created by M.M.LaFleur's Chief Creative Officer + Co-Founder, Miyako Nakamura. Prompted to reinterpret the "woman with an idea" in our own medium, my response is "She Believed"--an 11in x 14in framed multilayered mixed media collage on a discarded book cover. At first glance of the icon I was drawn to the bold shape, the sleek black, the clear confidence it exudes from this abstract woman, as well as the energy of the star beside it. Many of the women I admire in my life and throughout history postured themselves in this boldness in order to turn their ideas and dreams—sometimes with limited resources--into a living reality. In addition to my normal process, I let boldness and breaking through barriers be my guide. “She Believed” (which you can see in the last slide) is available on M.M.LaFleur’s website.
