I was 1 of 4 Houston-based artists selected to participate in the Artists on Site Series 3 of the Asia Society TX 6-week residency. The Asia Society TX provided each of us with one of their museum gallery spaces to serve as a public-facing studio where we created and exhibited work. During the residency the public were invited to witness us at work, observe our quieter studio moments, engage in conversation about with us about our creative processes or watch each stage development of the work.
The work created during the residency was born out of my own "search of.my mothers' gardens." Over the month I reflected on my maternal lineage- how they taught me "to carry water," Black womanhood and the story I was born into through various materials (found objects + photographs, photographs I created, and photographs + objects from my family archive). It was a month that allowed for experimenting, expansion and finding my way to what was inside so I could make it visible.
Below is a visual diary of moments from my site.
